Brandon Scott Waugh 1991-2025

The Why Behind the Rockin K Egg Bank

My 33-year-old son, Brandon Waugh, was killed in front of the Waffle House on Coulter St in Amarillo, TX, in the early morning hours of May 18, 2025, as he was walking to work. The driver was high and did not even know he had hit someone. This individual has a long history of arrests and plea deals and was out on bond at the time. Since then, he has been arrested again for possession, yet still remains out in the community.

Brandon was four months sober and working hard to rebuild his own life. He was walking three miles each way to get to work, trying to get back on his feet. Many loved ones had stepped back and allowed him to face consequences, and he was finally beginning to climb out of the darkness. He never got the chance to see my chickens or the homestead we were building.

Chickens, hatching, and breeding have become what keeps me grounded and getting out of bed each day. Addiction is a devastating disease that steals, kills, and destroys families. Through egg donations to local nonprofits, I began noticing familiar names and connections — places that had once helped my son during times of homelessness. Knowing he was cared for when I could not be there brings a small measure of peace, and in return, I now choose to give back in his honor by supporting others on their recovery journey.

As a person of faith, I am praying for the strength to forgive those responsible for his death, and for justice to be served. I also pray for our nation to turn away from using substances to mask pain, and instead turn to God for healing, restoration, and hope in our brokenness.

About the Rockin K Egg Bank

At Rockin K Homestead, our flocks provide more than beautiful eggs — they represent purpose-driven breeding and a commitment to community care.

Our primary focus is raising healthy, well-tempered chickens that help families produce their own food.  We use the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection (SOP) as a guideline in our breeding program, focusing first on overall bird health, strong structure, and good temperament. While we avoid intentionally breeding birds with defects, we also prioritize maintaining and improving a wide variety of egg colors and practical, productive flock traits. Each breeding pair is carefully selected to preserve strong genetics and produce a rainbow of eggs — from rich chocolate browns and speckled tans to blues and greens.

Any hatching eggs not incubated or sold are donated to local nonprofits that support individuals and families in need. This is our way of giving back — providing nourishment, dignity, and a small source of joy during difficult times.

The Rockin K Egg Bank is where intentional breeding meets intentional giving. Whether you are a breeder, backyard chicken keeper, or someone who simply believes in supporting local impact, we appreciate you being part of this journey.
