On May 18, 2025, my 33-year-old son, Brandon Waugh, was killed in front of the Waffle House on Coulter Street in Amarillo, Texas, while walking to work in the early morning hours. The driver who struck him was under the influence and did not even realize he had hit someone. He had a lengthy history of arrests and plea agreements and was out on bond at the time of the crash. Since Brandon's death, he has been arrested again on a drug possession charge, yet he remains free in our community.

Brandon was four months sober and working hard to rebuild his life. Without reliable transportation, he walked three miles each way to work because he was determined to create a better future. Like many families affected by addiction, we had reached the difficult point of allowing him to experience the consequences of his choices. But he was changing. He was finding hope again, and he was finally beginning to climb out of the darkness.

He never got the chance to see my chickens or the homestead we were building.

After losing Brandon, raising chickens, hatching chicks, and carefully breeding healthy flocks became more than a hobby—they became part of my healing. Caring for the animals gives me purpose and a reason to get out of bed each day.

Addiction is a devastating disease that steals, kills, and destroys families. As I began donating eggs to local nonprofit organizations, I started recognizing familiar names and places that had once helped my son during periods of homelessness. Knowing there were people who cared for him when I could not brings me a measure of peace. In return, I now choose to honor Brandon's life by giving back to those walking the difficult road of recovery and hardship.

As a person of faith, I pray daily for the strength to forgive those responsible for my son's death and for justice to be served. I also pray that our nation will turn away from using substances to numb pain and instead turn to God for healing, restoration, and hope in the midst of brokenness.

At Rockin K Homestead, our flocks provide far more than beautiful eggs—they represent intentional breeding, responsible stewardship, and a commitment to serving our community.

Our primary focus is raising healthy, well-tempered chickens that help families produce food for themselves. We use the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection (SOP) as a guide in our breeding program, emphasizing overall health, sound structure, and excellent temperament. While we avoid intentionally breeding birds with defects, we are equally committed to preserving a diverse range of egg colors and practical, productive traits that make outstanding backyard flocks.

Each breeding pair is thoughtfully selected to strengthen genetics while producing the beautiful rainbow of eggs our customers enjoy—from deep chocolate browns and richly speckled tans to vibrant blues and soft greens.

Any hatching eggs that are not incubated or sold are donated to local nonprofit organizations serving individuals and families facing hardship. Through these donations, we hope to provide not only nourishment, but also dignity, encouragement, and a small reminder that someone cares.
